Phlebotomy Training and Certification Requirements in Utah:

Getting yourself certified as a Phlebotomist in Utah is one of the smartest things you can do right now. Why? Utah has one of the fastest growing elderly populations in the country. Over 9.2% of the 2.9 million residents of Utah are 65 and over. With that aging population comes a higher demand for hospitals and health care centers.

Not only is the elderly population growing, but the overall population of Utah is exploding. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Utah is the second fastest growing state in the U.S. A 2012 Gallup national survey found Utah to be the “best state to live in” based on indices which included economic, lifestyle and health-related measurements. Getting Certified as a Phlebtomist in Utah:

Whereas states like California and Florida have strict state regulations for Phlebotomy certification, the state of Utah recognizes the national Phlebotomy certification agencies. So if you are certified in another state, then you can move to Utah and work there as a Phlebotomist.

While legally you don’t even need to be certified to work as a Phlebotomist in Utah, you can bet that nearly all workplaces will refuse to employ someone who hasn’t had the proper training. In other words, you become much more attractive to potential employers if you already certified.

National Phlebotomy Agencies:

Employers will require you to be certified by one of these agencies before you start working. Your particular Phlebotomy training program will usually culminate in a test supplied by one of these agencies:

National Center for Competency Testing – 145 test questions must be answered over 2.5 hours. Written evidence of clinical competency is required.
American Medical Technologists. Phlebotomist. Requires work experience, oral or written exam, renewal every three years through CEU and re-examination.
American Society for Clinical Pathology, Phlebotomy Technician (PBT, ASCP). Requires training or work experience, oral or written exam, renewal every ten years, can renew through CEU
American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, Phlebotomist. Requires practical exam, written exam, annual CEUs to maintain certification
National Phlebotomy Association. Phlebotomist. Requires oral or written exam

General Prerequisites For Phlebotomy Training Programs:

Each technical school or college has their own prerequisites for their programs, and we have featured a few of them below. But in general, most colleges tend to have these requirements:

Pass a background check and drug test (sometimes it’s included in the tuition cost, and sometimes it costs extra)
Submit your High School or GED transcripts
Complete up to 40 hours of didactic (classroom) training
Complete up to 40 hours of practical training
Prove that you are capable of as many as 100 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.

Professional phlebotomy certifications are different than postsecondary certificates (entry-level credentials) in that they certify that you have received specialized training through specific accredited organizations.
There are many Phlebotomy Training Programs available in Utah and you have an opportunity to choose between long and short programs, some with more practical experience than others, and some that offer externships that may introduce you to more employment opportunities. Phlebotomy Training Schools in Utah:

Here we’re going to feature three schools that offer training programs for Phlebotomy. The schools are–by no mean–the only three schools in the state of Utah. But we decided to feature these three because they give you an idea of the range of programs available to you:

1. DATC – Davis Applied Technology College

The Davis Applied Technology College offers a Phlebotomy training program that lasts 108 hours. This includes a 40 hour externship that will help you develop your skills in a practical setting. Before the externship, you need to pass a background check and drug test. There is no online component to this program.

2. Bridgeland Applied Technology College (BATC)

BATC offers a 10-week Phlebotomy training program that will culminate in you taking the National Healthcareer Association Certified Phlebotomy Technician Examination in order to get national certification. The tuition cost includes a mandatory background check. It does not include an externship, however once each week you will perform venipunctures as part of the class. The program does have a CPR-certification pre-requisite, which the college also offers. The website does mention that the program does have a successful job placement percentage of 79%.

3. Intermountain Health Care:

Intermountain health care offers a phlebotomy training program where they will pay you a wage while you are taking classes. After completing the program, you can apply to the open Phlebotomy technician positions in one of the surrounding hospitals or laboratories. You can read the full requirements on their website:
